The surfactant (surface active agent) keeps the asphalt droplets in suspension and controls the break time when they release from each other. The finished asphalt properties are greatly dependent upon the type of emulsifier. Asphalt emulsifiers are classified as either anionic or cationic. Anionic emulsifiers are based on fatty acids, while cationic emulsifiers are based on fatty amines.
